Reusable Menstrual Pads: a summary of  brands & materials I've tried

Any information here is definitely old and not an indication of current in-stock quality nor prices (especially since the FDA has started cracking down on reusable menstrual product sellers who haven't spent the ~$4000 a year to register their products). All my cloth products have held up beautifully though after approximately 4 years of monthly washing.

I use these in combination with a divacup so not much blood ever ends up on them. I never soak my pads in water because I'm forgetful and forget to change the water daily (the dirty, smelly water also skives me out more than the blood does). The blood dries solidly overnight and doesn't smell at all. It washes out nicely in the laundry (no special pre-treatment or soaps needed, just regular laundry detergent. I throw them in with my regular clothes, cold or warm wash). Have you ever washed a disposable menstrual pad? I'll admit I have. They always wash out completely - no staining (cloth and disposable).

Even in cases where the cup leaks all it's contents on the pad (ie spilled by clumsy me or when I can't get to a bathroom in time to dump the cup out for hours [ugg, ie nighttime locked national park bathrooms in downtown DC]), I just wash it in the shower/sink that night & let dry overnight. No lingering smell nor stains.

The vagina is naturally very acidic so the only discoloration of most pads come from the vaginal secretions 'bleaching' (flannel & cotton tops) - these lightenings of color are approximately shaped to my labia (toothpick sized discoloration in the middle of the pad top on my dark fabrics). Most people want dark cloth tops when first buying to hide any stains (I sure did) - but that kinda backfired with the 'bleaching'.

The only materials which show lightly brown stains are the Fuzzibunzs and raw silk.

Minky hasn't discolored at all but it is *hot* - even worn in Alaskan winters (only worn when I have to). Anything with PUL feels hot to me.

Silk is supposed to be good for yeast infections.

When starting a stash, don't forget you can get 1 discounted sample from the big companies (see lunapads, glad rags, party in my pants).

Note: PUL is a type of medical grade plastic
